Five summer habits that can help your spine

Summer’s a great time for getting outdoors, spending time with family and enjoying everything the warmer weather brings. Whether you’re in the garden, out for a walk or off to the seaside in your favourite flip flops, it’s also the season when your spine can take a bit of a beating if you’re not careful.

Here are five simple habits you can build into your summer routine to help keep your spine healthy and happy.

1. Choose your footwear wisely

Flip flops are a summer staple, but they’re not the best choice for your spine. They offer little support and can lead to aches in your feet, knees and lower back. Try to swap them for supportive sandals or trainers if you’ll be walking any distance or standing for long periods.

2. Mind your posture while gardening

It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re out in the garden, but hours of bending, digging and lifting can strain your back. Use knee pads or a small stool, take regular breaks and try to switch tasks so you’re not in the same position for too long.

3. Keep moving

It’s tempting to sit out in the sun for hours, but your spine needs movement to stay healthy. Take short walks, stretch regularly and make the most of outdoor activities. A little movement here and there goes a long way.

4. Stay hydrated

Your spinal discs are mostly water, and staying hydrated helps keep them supple and healthy. Make sure you’re drinking enough, especially on hot days or if you’re active outdoors.

5. Lift with care

Summer means everything from bags of compost to suitcases for your holidays. Always bend at the knees, keep heavy items close to your body and avoid twisting when you lift. If something feels too heavy, don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Enjoy a spine-friendly summer

A few small changes to your summer routine can make a big difference to your spinal health. If you find yourself struggling with aches, pains or stiffness, chiropractic care can help keep you moving comfortably all season long.
